Dave's Favorite Clip 03.09.09
Careless Whisper-Dave Koz ft Montell Jordan
This one brings back some great memories, too—we were making The Dance cd and I was asked to go on a writers/artists trip to Havana, Cuba where US and UK artists wrote songs with their Cuban counterparts... it was like a musical/cultural exchange — something I will NEVER forget. Anyway, on that trip were countless artists/singers/musicians and writers. One of whom was R&B singer, Montell Jordan. Montell and I immediately hit it off — we even wrote a song together on that trip. He suggested that when we got back to the States, we should collaborate on one of his favorite 'sax songs' and do a new, hip arrangement of it—turned out to be one of MY all-time favorite sax riff tunes, Wham's "Careless Whisper." So, a few weeks later, we did end up recording it, he sang the lead vocal — the album came out in 1999 and this song came out as a single the next year and actually became a modest R&B hit in 2000. Enough of a hit that Capitol, my record company, sprang for a very cool video — shot in LA at some seedy nightclub — all dressed up for our shoot. I remember it was (as all video shoots are) a VERY long day, but a ton of fun...very cool, hip people as extras. Montell was wonderful to work with and the clip still looks pretty good after all these years! Enjoy. DK.
