Dave Koz And His Friends Gerald Albright, Richard Elliot and Mindi Abair Take Summer Horns on the Road, Headlining L.A.’s Hollywood Bowl Aug. 18
June 20, 2013 – Dave Koz and Friends Summer Horns (Concord Records), featuring Dave Koz, Gerald Albright, Richard Elliot and Mindi Abair, debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Current Contemporary Jazz Album chart, marking the GRAMMY®-nominated saxophonist’s sixth album to top the chart. Summer Horns evokes the exuberance of the high-octane, richly arranged horn sections that fueled hits across all genre boundaries in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Together, the four acclaimed saxophonists turn up the heat on songs made famous by artists like Sly & the Family Stone (“Hot Fun In The Summertime”), Tower of Power (“So Very Hard To Go”), Earth, Wind & Fire (“Reasons”), Chicago (“25 Or 6 To 4”), Stevie Wonder (“You Haven’t Done Nothin’”), Herb Alpert (“Rise”) and others.
“I’ve always been fascinated with that sound. The first album I ever bought was Tower of Power’s Back To Oakland,” says Koz, an eight-time GRAMMY® Award nominee. “I feel like we’re entering another golden age – with horns prominently featured on hits by artists like Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Passion Pit and Capital Cities– and that it’s a fitting time to pay homage to those who came before.”
Summer Horns was produced by Paul Brown (Al Jarreau, George Benson, June Tabor, Boney James). In addition to the four-member front line of saxophones, the album also includes guest appearances by trumpeter/flugelhornist Rick Braun, trombonist Brian Culbertson and vocalists Michael McDonald, Jeffrey Osborne and Jonathan Butler.
Koz will be a featured guest on “The Tavis Smiley Show” from Public Radio International affiliates, airing nationwide this Friday, June 21, and an upcoming episode of “Tavis Smiley” on PBS (air date to be announced).
“Got To Get You Into My Life,” the lead single from Summer Horns, has climbed to #1* on the Mediabase Smooth A/C chart after only five weeks at radio. “Dave Koz and Friends’ rendition of the Lennon and McCartney classic captures the energy laid down in the hit 1978 cover of the song by Earth, Wind & Fire. The video for “Got To Get You Into My Life,” which recently premiered on Yahoo! Music, can be seen here. Two additional tracks from Summer Horns – “Hot Fun In The Summertime” and the foursome’s take on Ronnie Laws’ classic instrumental “Always There” – are also getting substantial airplay.
Koz, Albright, Elliot and Abair – who each typically headline their own individual tours – are on the road together this summer, marking the first – and at this time – only Summer Horns tour. Last weekend “Entertainment Tonight” gave viewers an exclusive inside look at rehearsals for the run, which includes two sold-out shows at Thornton Winery in Temecula, CA this weekend and a concert at Los Angeles’ legendary Hollywood Bowl on Sunday, August 18. See below for a full tour itinerary.
